Our Progress and our Journey
Thanks to the support we have received from the community we have installed a heated below ground pool. The siteworks and retaining wall have been completed
(see photos on 'Installing the pool' page).
The enclosure and changeroom building have started and we hope will be complete by the end of the year. Enclosing the pool will allow it to be used most of the year.
We have raised a total of $82,000. The pool, heater and siteworks/retaining wall have cost $44,000, $2000 has been set aside for ongoing pool maintenance and $36,000 is left (plus many donations and discounts) to build the changeroom/pool enclosure.
This is our story
On Saturday, 25 October, 2008 'The Trek' (a group of businessmen who raise funds for children in WA) presented Nathan with a pledge for $5000 to start the fundraising for a below ground swimming pool and heater.
Fundraising has been through cakestalls and raffles, a fashion parade, quiz night, a big fundraiser at The Prince of Wales hotel featuring local and Perth based bands, a Black tie Jazz Night, a recipe book, selling Cadbury fundraising chocolates, support and donations from other CWA branches and placing donation tins throughout the region in towns such as Harvey, Brunswick, Australind, Collie, Busselton, Bunbury and Capel and even as far away as Rockingham. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support from the local community and businesses.
Nathan is on the verge of walking independently but needs further strength and balance training to achieve this goal. It is hoped that daily water therapy, which cannot be accessed at present due to distance from a heated pool, will give Nathan the confidence and therapy that he needs. As well as benefitting Nathan, other families with disabled children will be invited to use the pool for their therapy needs. At present we have six families who have expressed interest, three of whom live in Capel.
